Navigating Common On-the-Job Challenges

I provide support and guidance to help you manage challenges most people face at some point in their careers. Below is a representative list.

My approach to your specific issues will be to first identify the problem to be solved, separate what you can control from what you can’t, and develop a plan of action related to your workplace and personal strengths.

Job Crafting - Unhappy at work but need to stick with your job? Job crafting is sometimes called the DIY (Do It Yourself) approach to creating meaningful work without changing jobs. This proactive strategy enables you to alter your boundaries, beliefs, and/or social relationships to make your job more satisfying and less stressful.

Career advancement strategy – Looking to move up in your organization? Let’s talk about ways to position yourself optimally by gaining skills, relationships, and a reputation for excellence.

Decision making counsel – Trying to choose a path at your current workplace or decide whether to accept a job offer? I can help you think through your decision by helping you gather the information you need, offering a new perspective and asking questions that will provide clarity to your motivations and options.

Negotiation of your non-compete agreement - You may be eager to sign anything your new employer puts in front of you because you're so excited about your new job and want to get off on the right foot. But there's some wiggle room in that agreement. One day you'll be leaving this shiny, new job. Use that wiggle room.

Improved relationships with co-worker/boss – There’s an axiom in my profession that people leave their bosses, not their jobs. Sometimes a boss is impossible. But sometimes a new perspective, new techniques for communicating, or revised expectations can make a lasting impact.

Annual review preparation and negotiation – I can help you build a strong case for a change in title, responsibility, compensation or level of communication and feedback.

Responding to a Performance Improvement Plan (PIP) – This is never an easy time - but it is an opportunity for reflection and reinvention. Many people I've counseled have been able to turn their situation around.

Requesting maternity, medical or family leave - When and how to disclose pregnancy, illness, adoption plans, or care for ill parents or children is tricky. So is arranging your FLMA time and workload to maximize your time off. Let's talk.

Rejecting or renegotiating a promotion – What happens when you’re asked to take a position at your organization that you don’t want? I can help you communicate your needs in a way that preserves your good standing.

Requesting a retention bonus - If your organization is being purchased, your boss likely benefits greatly from having you stay until the transition is "good enough" rather than having you leave ASAP to get a new job. You may be able to negotiate what's called a ""retention" or "stay" bonus of several thousand dollars. I can help.

Retirement preparation and transitioning – I can help you determine the timing, content and communication of your exit plan and ways to plan for meaning, structure and affiliation in life’s next chapter.
